We are used to corporate values of large companies. But even small businesses are guided by a certain worldview, which influences their behaviour.

As a child I was taught to treat others as I would like to be treated. As an adult, I have made Henry James' quote my own: “Three things are important in human life. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. The third is to be kind.” The American writer summed up what I feel. According to Cambridge Dictionary in American English "kindness" has a broad meaning: the quality of being generous, helpful and considerate towards others, or an act that demonstrates this quality. That’s what I mean by kindness. It’s much more than politeness. It encompasses my philosophy of life and my attitude towards work.

On my website I say that my core value is kindness. I could have added others: reliability, flexibility, accuracy, etc., but I take them for granted. Most companies and freelancers state similar values. Working well and in a conscientious manner is the least one can do.

Especially among freelancers and small businesses there is no clear division between professional and private life. It’s the personality of the owner that makes the difference.
